Anthym kicked off in 1977, same year Anthony, Flea, Jack and Hillel started their education at Fairfax Highschool, becoming classmates and best friends soon afterwards. The original lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Alain Johannes, guitarist Hillel Slovak, drummer Jack Irons and bassist Todd Strassman (later to be replaced by Flea, encouraged to reach for bass and taught how to play it by Hillel). This 1979's lineup was therefore 3/4 of original Chili Peppers.
In 1980 Anthym changed its name to What Is This?. Flea left the band two years later, after winning audition for popular punk rock formation called Fear. Therefore, he's not present on any official recording of the band.
