"ONE WORD AWAY"

Well, that didn't take long. Two weeks in and I'm already going meta and writing a song about writing a song. This one started months ago when I was trying to finish a song and told a friend I was "one word away." But I couldn't shake the feeling that ANY song that attempts in any way to say things about God will always fall short; He's always bigger and better than our attempts to communicate will ever express. And yet, we gotta keep trying. So here's a song about that quixotic yet delightful process of trying to say something you know can never be said.

I was writing this song
In fact I thought it was written
But each time I sang it
I could tell something was missing
I hate to admit it,
I just can't help feeling
That it's close, but it's one word away

I sang of Your beauty,
I mentioned Your kindness,
Your power, Your love, Your mercy
Your forgiveness all made my list
But a big enough word for You
God I just can't find it
Here I am, one word away

How humongous Thou art
You're mighty, You're mysterious
How 'bout awesome or immense?
Or indescribably glorious?
Aw dang it, I already used
That in the chorus
I guess I'm still one word away

So I went to my bookshelf
Pulled down my thesaurus
Majestic? Magnificent?
Maybe it's marvelous?
Gargantuan or galactic?
Or even ginormous?
Nope. I'm a singular adjective from completion.

I'm far from the first
To embark on this quest
There's Fanny Crosby, Isaac Watts
Chris Tomlin and the rest
Millions of words,
And not one of them best
So we're all still one word away

Even Dylan has tried it
And he's still tryin, God bless him,
And if Dylan can't write it
Maybe it just can't be written
So if I'm a failure,
At least I fail with him
Me and Bobby, we're both one word away

I searched and I searched
But I ain't never found it
I even tried Spanish
But I couldn't pronounce it
Try as I might,
There's just no way around it
