This is an edit of material filmed at Gartenbau Kino, Vienna. Art Rules was a one hour performance consisting on nonlinear sections of lecture, music, rants, dark noise, naked interventions, performance kunst references glues together by Chicks on Speed songs & ending in a paint pile up. The critique of art market is prevalent throughout, although the cast includes Douglas Gordon, a daring golden calf of the art market. In 2007 this cheekiness of performing critique while being funded by a great art institute/ collection, namely TBA-21 was confusing to believers in the market. A few years later the shallowness that the art world has been leveled to by speculation and the crafty crafting of markets by coalitions of journalists, institutes, collectors and art consultants is common knowledge.
Art Rules is, in no particular order: Kathi Glas, Anat Ben-David, Douglas Gordon, Alex Murray-Leslie, Melissa Logan, A.L. Steiner & in this case special collaborations with Christopher Just, Laurence Weiner, Florian Hecker and a special appearance of Francesca Hapsburg. A special thanks to her & her team at TBA-21 ( Eva Ebersberger in particular) for daring to produce this project at the time of the Viennese Art Week, which is known for being just commerce, no art.
