Charles Parker Jr. (August 29, 1920 -- March 12, 1955), also known as Yardbird and Bird, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer.
Parker acquired the nickname "Yardbird" early in his career and the shortened form, "Bird", which continued to be used for the rest of his life, inspiring the titles of a number of Parker compositions, such as "Yardbird Suite", "Ornithology", "Bird Gets the Worm", and "Bird of Paradise."
Parker was a highly influential jazz soloist and a leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique, and improvisation. Parker introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas, including rapidly passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. His tone ranged from clean and penetrating to sweet and somber. Many Parker recordings demonstrate virtuosic technique and complex melodic lines, combining jazz with other musical genres, including blues, Latin, and classical.
Parker was an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat Generation, personifying the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual, rather than an entertainer.

Charles Christopher Parker Jr. (Kansas City, 29 de agosto de 1920 - Nueva York, 12 de marzo de 1955), conocido como Charlie Parker, fue un saxofonista y compositor estadounidense de jazz. Apodado Bird, es considerado uno de los mejores intérpretes de saxofón alto de la historia de ese género musical, siendo una de las figuras claves en su evolución y uno de sus artistas más legendarios y admirados.
Junto con Bud Powell , Dizzy Gillespie, y otros, es uno de los iniciadores del bebop. Su estilo rompe con el del swing y se basa en la improvisación sobre una melodía modificando los acordes, creando así nuevas variaciones sobre la estructura de los temas. En este sentido, aparte de su obra interpretativa, Parker es autor de varios temas que se han convertido en estándares del jazz: Anthropology, Ornithology, Scrapple From the Apple, Ko Ko, Now's the Time y Parker's Mood.

Machito, born Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo on February 16, 1908, was an influential Latin jazz musician who helped refine Afro-Cuban jazz and create both Cubop and salsa music. He was raised in Havana alongside the singer Graciela, his foster sister.
In New York City, Machito formed the band the Afro-Cubans in 1940 and with Mario Bauzá as musical director, brought together Cuban rhythms and big band arrangements in one group. He made numerous recordings from the 1940s to the 1980s, many with Graciela as singer. Machito changed to a smaller ensemble format in 1975, touring Europe extensively. He brought his son and daughter into the band and received a Grammy Award in 1983, one year before he died.
Machito's music had an effect on the lives of many musicians who played in the Afro-Cubans over the years and on those who were attracted to Latin jazz after hearing him. George Shearing, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Stan Kenton credited Machito as an influence. An intersection in East Harlem is named "Machito Square" in his honor.
