Alright.

Since a handful of kindred spirits have asked for it, I’m gonna go ahead and be the poor sap who’s responsible for uploading The Wad’s debut EP onto the world-wide web. Believe me, I WOULD be posi-tively thrilled to deliver such a, uh... “delightful” set of tunes to all your awaiting auditory receptors, but the thing is, I know next to nothing about this project. It’s mongo new-wave coming out of St. Louis – I know that much – but the knowledge stops right about there. Er, at least the concrete bits, that is. From what I’ve gathered, The Wad is a project involving Martin Meyer, a St. Louis musician who’s better known by his doofy alias, “Lumpy”. And appropriately, this three-track EP was released under his eponymously-named label, Lumpy Records. Now, is The Wad a one-man band of Marty’s, or some sort of collaborative effort among other Missourian musicians? I’d guess the former; considering not only the atypical nature of the project, but also the fact that both Lumpy & The Dumpers and Cal & The Calories – two other bands of Lumpy’s – started off as a one-man deal too. The dude’s clearly capable of piecing together music on his own, but I dunno, I’ve learned not to jump to conclusions with this punk stuff. God forbid some punk-gatekeeper moseys on over with their high horse just to tell me about how fuckin’ wrong I am. Look, The Wad is a new-wave band coming out of Missouri, I can safely tell you that much.

Likewise, I’m sure it goes without saying that this EP is a weird one. As Lumpy put it in his Marty’s World compilation tape (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZXcqBHO3Ew), “circus music is not a genre, it’s a religion.” With a line-up consisting of what appears to be a bass, a synthesizer, a verbose percussion section (including a xylophone, a triangle, a vibraslap, and occasionally a dual-percussion set-up) – and in the case of “Nog Bag” – a handful of warped guitar chords, it shouldn’t come to a surprise to hear that The Wad is beyond atypical. I would parade it around as some “quirky” synth-punk band, but the unmistakably sporadic songwriting and unorthodox instrumentation lends the group to be an entirely different brand of weird. It’s goofy, light, and clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, especially when Marty is nonsensically whining about a tit-heads and uncontrollable urge to slap them with his “nog”. Punk is dumb, and The Wad is no exception. Feast your ears with this aural abomination and try not to ask too many questions.
