DESCRIPTION:
Yoooo, Lumpy Records #69... ha, get it? Like the sex thing. Y’know, where two people perform oral sex on each other’s genitals by placing their bodies atop one another in an inverse fashion, not unlike the numbers found in 69 – where the sex position draws its name from – allowing the partners to stimulate themselves simultaneously, assuming that they’re approximately the same height. Hah. Now that, my dudes, is fucking comedy.

Like the Lumpster says himself, it ain’t no accident that this is the 69th release to be entered in Lumpy Records’ catalog. This funky little number is Hairlong N Freeky, an NWI-based new-wave/disco project made up by Cody Phifer (plays/played in C.C.T.V., Blotter, Glue) and Mark Winter (plays/played in C.C.T.V., The Coneheads, Liquids, Ooze, Big Zit, and a shitload of other bands, as I’m sure you’re aware). Now, be mindful of the fact that Hairlong N Freeky isn’t exactly a real band; as far as I can tell, this pseudo-band has performed but a single show during early-2016’s “This Is Austin, Not That Great” fest, with a line-up consisting of assorted Austin-based musicians. Aside from that, Hairlong N Freeky’s existence was solely confined to a single tape released in late 2015, with said tape featuring nothing in terms of information on the project (barring the phrase “Disco N Speeky” followed by a small drawing of two conjoined heads. Similarly, the 7” features nothing but “Lumpy Rex #Sixty Nine” followed by completely-irrelevant instructional artwork in regards to properly carrying a rectangle). That remained the case until St. Louis’ Lumpy Records re-released the six-track EP on wax earlier this month, but even by that point, I had no clue as to what was going on with the original tape that the 7” derived from. A short-winded bio on Discogs stated that Hairlong N Freeky was a project between members of The Coneheads and Lumpy and The Dumpers, but as I’ve learned from Will Mecca’s blog a few months ago (http://errydawghashisday.blogspot.com/2016/05/hairlong-n-freeky-disco-n-speeky-cs.html), the tape was actually brought to fruition by Cody Phifer and Mark Winter, with Cody recording the music and Mark providing the spoken-word vocals. Any and all information besides that is completely lost on me, I’m afraid. This is all I’ve got.

Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t have even bothered with putting this group on the channel. No, not because I intended on retaining the “sanctity” of my “underground” music library by keeping certain bands under wraps or some lame shit like that, but simply because the tape was uploaded to Youtube long before I had even heard of the project. But, as previously mentioned, the tape was recently re-released by Lumpy Rex earlier this month, so I figure that now’s a fair opportunity to get Hairlong N Freeky up on the Jimmy and, hopefully, raise awareness for Cody and Mark’s brilliance. So yeah, I paid some money last week to get this EP, along with a handful of other Lumpy-branded material, just so I can rip the vinyl and upload them to the internet. Was it a smart financial decision for me to make? Fuck no, I’m broke. But if at least one of you cheesebrains get even the slightest bit of use out of these recordings, then shoot, I guess I’ll be able to sleep soundly knowing that I’m not twenty-something dollars in the hole. Expect two more Lumpy-goodies over the weekend, courtesy of some stupid cartoon dog on the internet. Oh, and pardon the cracks, snapples, and pops on these records, since the vinyl got to me pretty dinged and dusty this afternoon. I brushed off what I could and called it a day. Hey, I don’t get paid enough to go out and clean these things properly – shit, I don’t get paid at all. These songs are pretty fuzzy to begin with anyways, so stuff it.
