SXSW Music Festival, 2006--Austin, TX: In our latest installment from SXSW, Gearwire talks to George Hunter and Miguel Castillo of the Chicago-based roots trio, Catfish Haven. George and Miguel explain their straightforward approach to songwriting, recording, and performing: "go with what you know" seems to be the mantra for these guys. Eschewing complex overdubs (and even electric guitars) in favor of basic instrumentation and soulful singing, Catfish Haven prove they only need the barest elements to put it across.With their first full-length, Tell Me, due Sept. 12 on Secretly Canadian, 2006 looks to be the year for these guys. Having won over critics at Pitchfork, CMJ, and Spin, and having toured with the likes of Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket, George, Miguel, and drummer Ryan Farnham continue to push their music far beyond the confines of the trailer park that gave the band its name.
