Chris Catena

"Freak Out" (Frontiers)

Way back in March 2002 a guy called Chris Catena got this awesome idea about, getting together some of the best veteran rock performers ever to have walked the face of the earth.

And I must admit that Chris pulled it off -- in a really big way.

He rounded up some of the best musicians -- and among them some of my long time personal favourites. So it's no wonder I had huge expectations when Chris got in touch with me about reviewing this record.

The overall impression with this collection of great rock songs is that each song radiates an atmosphere of perfection. This is not only rock'n'roll -- this is art in music and all 15 songs are examples of how well a rock tune can come out when played by highly skilled musicians.

The participating musicians is overwhelming in itself: Let me just mention a few and in no specific order: Bernie Marsden, Tommy Aldridge, Bruce Kulick, Micky Moody, Jeff Scott Soto, Eric Singer, Vitalij Kuprij and Myron Dove. Lots of other acclaimed musicians on the list, but more about them later on."Freak Out" consists of 15 songs that vary in both atmosphere and intensity. There's the silent moody rock ballad, a classic rock'n'roll tune, and some more funky and aggressive stuff as well. The songs vary a lot but despite the difference in their expression they are equally interesting and catchy for the listener. While making this review I've listened to the record 3 times and my impression with the outcome of the recording sessions, that have taken place all over the world, has grown a little each time.

From the first chord I was hooked on this compilation consisting of the work of some of the best musicians ever.

The idea Chris Catena got about getting those magnificent musicians together, was indeed a great one and I'm glad he pulled it off. It is indisputably a hard task to accomplish, but the effort put into this project is very worth the outcome. One song I'd like to accentuate is "Sweet Talker" which you probably already know in the Whitesnake edition. Yes, a cover version of the classic song from the band that gave us such commended songs like: "Love Ain't No Stranger", "Trouble" and "Walking in The Shadow of the Blues".

For those of you who are into classic blues infested hard rock and funkier rhythms, the "Freak Out" album will be a gem in your record collection.

Thumbs up for "Freak Out" and the people who made it possible.
