In last weeks Free Tuesday Lesson we talked about a cool Barry Galbraith ii - V - I Lick that was a great introduction into getting that bebop sound. It was a slower Lick but really outlined the chords nicely.

This Charlie Parker Lick is a bit more challenging but is very similar in the way that it outlines the underlying chords. This Lick is working over a VI - ii - V - I chord progression … and the tempo is much faster. But take it really slow … don't worry about speed … this lick still sounds cool over a much slower tempo. Really hear the changes and get familiar with the finger shapes before kicking that metronome up to higher speeds.

This Guitar Lesson is based on a Charlie Parker Lick that was shown in the March 2009 issue of Guitar Techniques magazine. As we stated in the video … do yourself a favor and get a subscription to this fantastic magazine … every month is a new learning experience!

In this Guitar Lesson we hope you not only get a cool Charlie Parker Lick … but you also come away with some cool concepts that you can begin to explore with. That's the whole idea … at least in our minds … the goal shouldn't be to have a huge bag of Licks. You should Learn licks so that you learn new concepts and phrases and patterns and note choices … and then start taking those small concepts and incorporate those into scales and phrases that you already play.
