The Jets - Alligator Come Across (Live at Where House in Derby, UK, 1992) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 08, 2008
DESCRIPTION:
The Jets were formed in 1978 when Tony Cotton joined older brothers Bob and Ray, who had previously been gigging in a 4-piece. The trio's talent was quickly recognized and they were soon gigging the national Rock 'n' Roll scene, being picked up by Soho Records. This deal spawned two singles "Rockabilly Baby"/"James Dean" followed by "Sleep Rock 'n' Roll"/"Hey Baby" - both highly collectable today.

Their ever increasing popularity got them noticed by Lightning Records, and their debut album, simply titled "Jets" pushed them into the mainstream when licensed to EMI. Each Jets single release saw increasing sales and airplay. "Sugar Doll" threatened to score a national hit, but it was the follow-up "Yes Tonight Josephine" that finally broke the top 30. This powerful track with its thumping bassline, a surefire hit with their fanbase, was melodic and catchy too, which, combined with their youthful good looks, made The Jets perfect for the pop market. It peaked at #25 in October 1981, followed by their biggest hit "Love Makes The World Go Round" which hit #21 in February the following year.

The album "100% Cotton" also made the national Top 30, but chartwise The Jets had now peaked. Further attempts to crack the charts failed, and lacked the Rock 'n' Roll drive of their earlier releases. The Jets' days as pop stars were numbered.

As the song on this film states, "You Can't Keep A Good Man (or band) Down" - and the Cotton Brothers continued to prove themselves one of the best Rock 'n' Roll bands in the country with a string of superb releases on their own Krypton label. Solid live performances, like the one here, soon had them back in favour with the Rock 'n' Roll crowd.

Versatile enough to switch effortlessly between raw Rockabilly and polished Doo-Wop harmonies, and talented enough to blend both styles to perfection, Bob, Ray and Tony perform an upbeat set which combines Rockabilly obscurities, Rock 'n' Roll Classics and Jets originals, topping the bill at the 1992 "Rockabilly Jamboree" in Derby.
