Sacramento Home Grown (1975 Mather Home Grown Feeling) - Jim Wright - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 19, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
Now for something really different.....I had forgotten all about this until my daughter, Gena, reminded me of a contest I entered way back in 1975 when I was in the Air Force, stationed at Mather AFB, Sacramento, California. The local radio station ran a contest, asking musicians all over the valley to submit songs about Sacramento - 12 songs would be selected to create an album. An airman who worked for me wrote a few lines of what would become the first verse of a song and gave it to me and asked me to finish the lyrics and do the music and sing the song to compete in this contest. So I got my old sound-on-sound tape recorder out and put this song together. I played all the guitar parts and had my brother in law, Sam Blake, play the bass. I sang all the vocals (I know, I'm not a singer, but somebody had to do it). Every day the radio station played the many entries they received, and asked the audience to vote for the songs that they wanted on the album and of course they had a big "buildup" to the date the winners would be announced. Our song made the album and we felt like big time recording "stars", especially around the Air Force Base, where everyone was pulling for us to be included on the album. My daughter asked me to upload this so this is all her fault.....
