PJ BUTTA
Born and raised in San Diego, California, PJ Butta moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of La Verne. It was there he would develop his skills as a radio broadcaster and parlay that into a successful career in the music industry.
PJ began as a promotions intern at LA’s top rated Hip Hop and R&B station, KKBT – The Beat. As a member of the Beat Street Team, he quickly rose up the ranks from intern to on air personality. For over 10 years, PJ had one of the most listened to shows and was known for breaking new music with his Butta Bootlegs segment. New songs from major artists like Janet, Mary J. Blige and Eminem were heard months before they even came out and new artists like Alicia Keys and Bobby Valentino would be discovered before they became superstars.
The popularity of PJ’s radio show lead to other opportunities in music and television. He teamed up with Grammy Award winning producers, The Avila Brothers, to work on projects ranging from Usher to Jennifer Hudson, and was A&R for The Avila’s critically acclaimed CD, The Mood: Soundsational.
In television, PJ guest starred as himself in the sitcom Moesha starring R&B singer Brandy and has appeared in Sister Sister, The Parkers, Showtime’s Soul Food, as well as commercials for Adidas, Best Buy and Budweiser.
But the popularity of PJ Butta stretches beyond Los Angeles. His Butta Bootlegs reach millions worldwide through his website, www.pjbutta.com, and he is heard in over 20 countries from Africa to New Zealand and throughout the Caribbean via his internationally syndicated Top 20 Hip Hop and R&B countdown radio program, The World Chart Show.
The worldwide appeal of PJ has made him one of the most sought after club DJs. Even though his roots are in Hip Hop and R&B, PJ’s musical tastes and selections aren’t limited to one genre of music. In Montego Bay he was called “the best House DJ,” and in Kingston he is known as “one of the wickedest Dancehall selectors.” He is the official DJ for Heineken in the Caribbean, playing popular nightspots like Bliss in St. Maarten and Fiction in Kingston. He has played at major corporate events for Heineken and Fox Sports, from the Green Synergy Finals to the Super Bowl.
Aside from giving people what they want to hear, PJ also gives back to the people. He’s been involved with various community organizations like Challenger’s Boys & Girls Club, American Red Cross, Casey Family Programs and BookPals. PJ is also a college professor at Mt. San Antonio College where he shares his knowledge and experience with broadcasting students.
PJ Butta is many things. Ethnically he is of Filipino-Polish-Irish-French Canadian descent. He is a husband to Los Angeles radio personality, Nautica De La Cruz, and a father to his daughter Brooklyn. He is a radio DJ. He is a club DJ. He is a songwriter and actor. He is an activist and educator. He is as diverse as the music he plays. Whether it’s Dancehall or Dance music, 80s Rock or Pop, PJ does it all and does it well.
