This is a bass groove technique from my "secret bag of tricks" - meaning I don't get to teach it very often and it's not as widely known/taught as techniques like slapping and tapping. This right hand percussion technique is a way of implying a certain groove even when you don't have a drummer handy.

The "backbeat" - snare drum hits on beats 2 and 4 - is the foundation of groovy music. By making the backbeat audible with right hand smacks, we can help listeners hear and feel the groove in drummerless music (like solo bass music).

There are a lot of ways to apply this technique, and although it's simple, if you try to fit it into a variety of different bass lines, you'll find a few challenges to overcome as you go along. Which is good! Like I mentioned briefly in the video, you can also do this technique while simultaneous plucking a note - but you'll have to figure that out yourself for now. :)
