>Knocked conscious At a time where there is so much separation within the music industry, and underground and commercial labels being placed on artists, ASC has emerged at the forefront of the hip hop scene to fill the void. With unparalleled lyricism and rich content filled tracks, the four man group consisting of MC’s Nautilus and Nisan, DJ Wels, and producer Oddio have independently risen to the top of the growing Northwest music scene. Capable of blessing any category of production, from raw street anthems to melodic symphonies, ASC has taken pride in being the “bridge” to the music barrier facing the industry today.Ironically, the nucleus of the group was formed in music class in elementary school where Nautilus and Nisan both attended. Coming from different backgrounds, Nautilus originally from Austin, TX and Nisan from the Windy City, the two formed an instant bond in the small metropolitan city of Vancouver, WA. Though times changed with Nisan moving to Sacramento, CA and each handling personal and family struggles, the duo reunited in high school with a revived sense of music and an unmatched vision.Flooding local record stores from the Vancouver/Portland area up along the I-5 to Seattle where the core of ASC now resides, “Damage Assessment”, ASC’s new album, has introduced listeners to a sound unlike anything else they’ve heard in the Northwest. “We’re at a real special place right now music-wise because we’re coming at an angle that no one else has taken, it’s really helped to separate us from everything else,” says Nautilus.Their new found success has landed them numerous gigs all across the Northwest, opening up for talents such as Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Sucka Punch, as well underground shows with local artists where ASC has been able to shine and entertain stunned and emphatic crowds. “Lyrically and production wise, these cats are extremely talented and can take their music to the next level,” says Maco of Old Dominion.None of this has stopped them however from continuing to advance in all phases of their music. Their skills have given them the opportunity to network with many influential contacts in the Northwest and the chance to begin marketing themselves to a worldwide audience. Newly developed collaborations with producers such as C+, J-Goods, and People’s Choice, have enabled them to branch out and hit new levels on tracks which can be heard on the new ASC sampler D.A. 2.0.“We know there is so much potential for us out here if we continue to stay focused and concentrate on making music our way,” Nautilus says. “We got high goals we’ve set for ourselves and if we stay on track really anything is possible.”With Damage Assessment, ASC has placed its foot in the door to further success and has taken the steps necessary to fulfill the crossover gap in hip hop.DAMAGE ASSESSMENT ALBUM REVIEW by SUPERHAPPYWAX.COM

Altered States of Consciousness- "Damage Assessment"

Members: Nautilus, N.I.S.A.N., Oddio and DJ Wels

Producers: Oddio, Rob Muria (1 track)

Highlights: Title Track, "Brigade", "Clean Slate", "Take it Back", "The Last Cypher"

ASC's debut album "Damage Assessment" is a non-stop barrage of lyricism that once you push play doesn't let up until you hear the squeak of the CD starting over. The concept of the album has a loosely based war theme with the emceeing held down by MCs Nautilus and N.I.S.A.N. nicely. There are very few points on the album that seem forced. DJ Wels brings some dope scratching out of the woodwork although he's only on a handful of tracks. The title track feels like an army marching to battle with thundering piano notes and cinematic strings while the emcees bomb you with non-stop lyrics concerning the outfits' views on preserving rawness in the culture. "This is war time, Altered States facin to the left// The Ring associates marchin in syncopated steps// Bioatomic bomb drops, gasmask for the fallout// plaguing disease, praying on emcees, leave em sprawled out// No firewalls can stop my attacks on this industry// it's independent true to life music, who's listening?// Make some noise, mash out, pump your fist, raise levels, bass treble, we gon slay devils over ice bezels// Cause using corny hooks to represent the art they sellin out stop buying in the streets need to play they part// Seize the marketplace, tell me suit and ties what we tryina hear// The real hip hop, Altered States bringin it loud and clear// For every inch of underground we raising, making these fakes vacate like Bush in November with no replacement." ?Nisan on the title track ?Damage Assessment?"Take it Back" is an ode to the way hip hop was back in the golden days with a slow swaggering beat and a monster hook. This track along with "Damage Assessment" and "The Last Cypher" were the first three tracks that really had me liking this project. As for the constructive criticism portion of the review. The production on this CD is all done by keyboard which leads to a lack of diversity at the end of the day. I don't think there are any samples on this project. Even the guest producers' track is a keyboard beat. Although there are some hot beats on this album, there are also some points where the beats don't support the Emcees raw style to their fullest potential.

I like the way they came on this one, I'm also interested to see where they go from here. A little tightening here and there and you got yourself a super group. It's exciting an album like this came out of the Portland area because it's different than what a lot of cats are doing around here. There really haven't been that many really raw emcees dropping projects as of late. Apparently the crew is dispersing across Washington but say they'll still remain together as A.S.C. Good luck to them. Word is Nisan has an Ep dropping very soon too.
