DESCRIPTION:
A late masterpiece from Liszt and from his third set of 'Annees de Pelerinages', 'Jeux d'Eaux' is for many the most comprehensible and immediately attractive piece from this set. With its relatively conventional harmonies and religious overtones, it seems closer in atmosphere to his 'Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses'.
Friedheim's playing is characteristically uninhibited yet highly controlled and employs contrasting tempi to great effect. The roll tempo itself is critical and as usual the 'Tempo 90' marked on the roll was found to be completely incorrect.
Friedheim recorded this for the Duo Art reproducing piano in 1916, but due to the arrangement there are technical difficulties associated with its reproduction on player systems, so any re-performance on a Duo Art piano could only ever be unconvincing,
Hence my attempt at this manually produced version on a non Duo Art Solophonola pedal piano.
The pictures are of some spectacular fountains, the first is of the display at the Villa D'Este, the rest are fountains in the gardens of the Peterhof near St Petersburg, Russia.
