A public memorial service for Charlotte-based entertainer Arthur Smith who died April 3 at 93 was held Saturday April 12, 2014 at Calvary Church. Top musicians like the Avett Brothers and Grand Ole Opry star George Hamilton IV took part in the celebratory service that began at noon. Close friend and record producer Fred Foster spoke of his long time relationship with Smith and his wife of 73 years Dorothy Smith.
