Word of the Day: AxRxM

[ay-ecks-are-em]

Noun:
1) A stylized acronym of “Apathetic Ronald McDonald”, a disgustingly-ballistic thrash/powerviolence group from California. A long-running project equally composed of destructive rhythms and head-slamming grooves.
2) A cooler way of spelling the word “arm”.

“AxRxM” in a sentence:

“AxRxM is a powerviolence band that started up between two best friends, Omar Romero and Alvaro Cortez, who had a deep obsession with all bands fast and loud, especially the classics. The Locust, Spazz, Charles Bronson, pretty much anything with members of those bands. The tiny city of Fontana only a handful of kids who picked up on what is our brand of hip hop, where instead of breakdancing, graffiting and rapping, we skated, thrashed and had a DIY ethic. They picked me [Eddie] up as a lead singer -- being a quiet, weird, crusty kid -- and with the help of the humble online socializing via Myspace and AOL punk chat rooms, AxRxM began to take off, with its brand of spazzy guitar riffs, rolling, off-time drumming and vocals that complimented. I always saw the vocals as an instrument to throw words that went well, rather than try to over-do it and be political when we were just not that invested in political views to begin with. Just like many others, straight-edge and animal rights were fun -- at least until the next thing -- and even then, drugs and alcohol were a blast until we were too old to be 'cute' by doing lines in a car, buzzed on cheap beer, before a set. It might be a bit close-minded, but we are somewhat stuck in that time; the mid-to-late 2000s. So a lot of our efforts are still sincere to what we think AxRxM should sound like. Omar and I are the two oldest members, but even the 'new guy', Moses (from Los Angeles bands Syntax, Bastardass, Liberate), is about 5 years deep in the band. Al, the original drummer and creator of our sound, was one stubborn dude who was critical about every decision, even about how much feedback to let ring at the end of a song. In some ways, he served as a guide to rarely fluff things up: we like it straight to the point. Where as most powerviolence drop tune and growl with caveman-like pounding sludge breakdowns, I like to scream high to float over and the guitars. It's fun, and in my way to describe it, swirly. Our second guitarist, Sergio Galvan (RIP), passed away a few years ago. We lost him and and Tom Arley, our drummer, after Alvaro decided to step to the side, so our band went on hiatus for a bit. We waited around for the right guy to become part of the team. After years of seeing Jay Kastro beasting it on drums for awesome bands such as Cave State, Crom and Hoy Pinoy, we somehow lured him to the dark side . And now we are off and running; a bit wiser, but just as fun. These are recordings of our new stuff with our now-final line up, right before we begin recording brand new material -- which will come soon.

-Eddie”
