Church of Betty - Ampersand (Tripping With Wanda, 2002, Fang Records) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 31, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
The melody and rhythm of Ampersand were originally created for an earlier solo piece, Ava in 1996. Ampersand is sleeker, with melodies bending and falling in unexpected patterns. The lyric comments on the ever-shifting combinations of musicians in Chris’s circle reshaping into different bands over time. Kenny Siegal’s lap steel punctuates the track.

Ampersand, ampersand. ‘And’ is the promise of things to come. ‘Or’ is the chance of exclusion. Ampersand, ampersand. ‘And’ is the number of dreams to come. Or we evolve into different bands. Those walls come crashing down, the cymbals closing on our hands. Big information spinning ’round, two hundred million ampersands. We renegotiate the love we redistribute to each other and ourselves. Trading riffs from hell, we share the wounds that cause our hearts to split and bleed into a song. We’ll have lots of fun as all the ‘ands’ and ‘ors’ and ‘maybes’ swirl in circles in our brains. Place between our names this ampersand.
