THE BAD NERVES - Alienate EP - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 29, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
The Bad Nerves is an ex-synth punk band from Winnipeg who "have no friends at all". I likely would've never heard of these nudniks had it not been for not one, but two of their members accidentally reaching out to me with their material over the course of two days. The first member came forth with the band that The Bad Nerves eventually became; essentially, this band dropped the synthesizer and evolved into a straight-forward hardcore group called "Craterface". It's actually a pretty impressive endevour as it stands now. Despite their poor recording techniques, I still think their material shows a lot of promise, especially in their track "Smothered". Those are some rock-solid rhythms there. Besides, any band that tags themselves as "meme punk" is a cool band to me. Check it out for yourself here: https://soundcloud.com/craterfacewinnipeg

Craterface is good and all, but they've yet to put out an actual release, meaning I don't exactly have any proper material to share on my channel (though, they've told me that they're set to drop two tapes by the end of the summer, with one that should be ready within the next month or so. I'll be sure to cover that once it's out). All that leaves me to take a look at is The Bad Nerves; which, coincidentally enough, is the band that I enjoy a hell of a lot more (so far).

As I previously stated, The Bad Nerves is a synth-punk band. Thankfully, the synth doesn't take a backseat and strictly serve to add to the guitarist's rhythms; in fact, it practically drives this entire thing. I feel like too many "synth-punk" bands take the former approach, where it's pretty much just another punk group except they decided to throw a synth into the background. Here, The Bad Nerves practically revolves entirely around the synth, and it works so damn well. Their sounds may come off as dorky to some, but I still admire it. Once the larynx-shredding vocals and angular riffs are accompanied by this Genesis-era synth, it gets kinda goofy; that's probably what I find so appealing. Hell, I highly doubt that the band's even taking themselves seriously, so neither will I. For example, the last track, "Whiplash", is supposedly a real life story about how their drummer, Sammy, whipped his dick out and jerked off in the backseat of a car while the group almost got in a head-on collision with a semi. Not the most mature subject matter, I don't think. So, if you're really intending to take on The Bad Nerves with a straight-face, then you're probably not gonna like them very much. But if you're a fucking idiot like me, you'll probably dig it yourself. The band's retired now though, so don't expect any new material from them. We'll have to make do with their 2013 EP and hope that the synthesizer makes a surprise appearance on Craterface's future releases.

And yeah, this EP's been uploaded before, but I've got the band's blessings to share it here. So stuff it, dorks, before I cream you.

I'd probably make for a good schoolyard bully.
