Willy Rehberg plays Schumann ~ Davidsbundlertanz Op.6 ~ Premier recording for Hupfeld C.1909 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 14, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
This set of rolls recorded by Hupfeld were amongst the most important recorded by them. Willy Rehberg (1863 - 1937) seems to have specialized in the works of Schumann, and we can be thankful that Hupfeld produced his 'Davidsbundler' complete and without cuts, (nor produced in various separate rolls by different pianists as were the 'Fantasiestucke'). Though probably he was not the neatest technically, nevertheless in his hands one could easily conclude that this is indeed the way Schumann should be played.
Significantly, it is interesting to note the similarities with regard to style and interpretation in the gramophone recording of Davidsbundler made some thirty years later by Fanny Davies, a pupil of Clara Schumann. This can be heard on Pianopera's channel.
