William Henry "Chick" Webb (1903-1939) was the Baltimore, Maryland born drummer who is responsible for the success of Ella Fitzgerald. Webb was the leader of the Savoy Ballroom's house band through much of the 1930s and was considered the Original King of Swing and considered the King of the Savoy. He and his orchestra infamously defeated Count Basie and his band, Benny Goodman as his Orchestra w/ Gene Krupa, and a host of other challengers. This title plays on Chick's drumming ability and his last name.
