"The Water Is Wide" (also called "O Waly, Waly") is a folk song of English origin, based on lyrics that partly date to the 1600s. It remains popular in the 21st century. The imagery of the lyrics describes the challenges of love: "Love is handsome, love is kind" during the novel honeymoon phase of any relationship. However, as time progresses, "love grows old, and waxes cold." Even true love, the lyrics say, can "fade away like morning dew."
The modern lyric for "The Water Is Wide" was consolidated and named by Cecil Sharp in 1906 from multiple older sources in southern England, following English lyrics with very different stories and styles, but the same meter.The Water is Wide may be considered a family of lyrics with a particular hymn-like tune.

Cette chanson figure sur le premier album de Graeme Allwright en 1966, immense chanteur, adaptateur de chansons, et auteur-compositeur néo-zélandais . C'est une adaptation en français d'une très belle chanson traditionnelle américaine d'origine irlandaise, popularisée notament par Pete Seeger, mais aussi par Odetta, Harry Belafonte, The Kingston Trio, Joan Baez, et beaucoup d'autres. Le chanteur Renaud a utilisé la mélodie pour sa chanson La ballade Nord-Irlandaise (1991) Le chanteur Neil Young a repris ce même air dans sa chanson Mother Earth (1990).
"The Water Is Wide" is one of the most popular "Folk songs" today, not at least because of its beautiful tune. The song has been performed and recorded by countless artists. I heard it first from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez who sang it as a duet in 1975. Their performance was one of the highlights of Dylan's movie Renaldo & Clara and this version can now be found on the CD Live 1975 .
"The Water Is Wide" is often called an "old Folk song" but in fact it is not that old. It came only to prominence after Pete Seeger introduced the song in 1958 on his LP American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 2 (Folkways FW 02321). In fact it was somehow courageous to designate the song as an "American Favorite Ballad" because it was barely known there at that time.
