"When Katie Sings" ~ Celtic Mayhem with guest Carl Asch of Empty Hats - Video
PUBLISHED:  Dec 28, 2009
DESCRIPTION:
Carl Asch (aka Giacomo of the band Empty Hats) joins Celtic Mayhem to perform the beautiful song "When Katie Sings" at the 2009 Camelot Days Medieval Festival in Hollywood, Florida.

Ty Billings wrote this song awhile back when he was with the Minstrels of Mayhem, and as far as I know, this is the only video recording of it. Carl, Ty, and Martyn demonstrate great harmonies here along with Jack's fine violin.

This performance was a special request by Carl Asch. He is producing a CD to be entitled "Now" which features him playing with a number of other groups, performing some of their lesser known songs. "When Katie Sings" will be included on that album.

I apologize that the sound quality is a bit off due to the venue and wind conditions, and for the shaky video at the very beginning but they caught me off-guard with this one and I wasn't quite ready to film yet when they started. Still, I hope you enjoy their unique performance as much as we enjoyed filming it. Best viewed in HD.

Featuring Carl Asch on lead vocals, Ty Billings on vocals and guitar, Martyn Wylde on vocals and bass guitar, and Jack Stamates on violin.

(Lyrics as best I know them, please correct me if you know better...)

There's a town in County Clare where the river runs free,
and the green upon the hillside can always be seen,
where we toil through the day, and work endlessly,
to be what we're raised to be...

I, myself, am the Miller's son Tom,
I grind up all the wheat as the day carries on,
there's a moment in the day that makes it worthwhile,
and that's what makes me smile.

(Tom Miller's chorus)
La la la la-la la la-la,
la la la-la la la-la,
la la la la-la la la-la,
la la-la la-la...

Well they call me Kasey-Joe, I'm the son of the Smith,
I hammer through the day 'till my muscles are stiff,
but there's a moment in the day that can simply inspire,
that sets my heart on fire.

(Kasey-Joe Smith's chorus)
La-la la-la la la-la la la-la la,
La-la-la la la-la la,
La-la la-la la la-la la la-la la,
la-la-la la-la-la la...

My name is Pat O'Neill, I'm a Tinker by trade,
come on by my shop, see the kettles I've made,
There's a time when I close, and I search as I stroll,
for the sound that touches my soul.

(Pat O'Neill's chorus)
La la-la la-la-la la-la-la-la-la la-la,
la-la la-la-la-la-la la-la,
la la-la la-la-la la-la-la-la-la la-la,
la-la-la la la-la

(violin/cello interlude)

Well the story is the same, all through the town,
there's an hour in the day when we lay our work down,
there's an hour when we set aside our pitchforks, our mops,
and all of our laboring stops...

But there's someone hard at work in a shop down the lane,
she bakes all the bread to this lovely refrain,
it's the hour of the day when we all feel like Kings,
'cause that's when Katie sings...

(finish with all chorus together in multi-part harmony).
