The real purpose of these videos (as well as my own bass covers) is to offer up some form of tribute to a band that has influenced both Harry and myself musically and, in some ways, personally.

The musical influences may have been obvious - they were the musicians we most wanted to play like. And RUSH was the band we most wanted to be like. We'd do our best to learn each new album note for note while simultaneously whittling down their back catalog. The first good bass I bought was a Rickenbacker and I'd crank the treble as high as it would go in order to try and get Geddy's tone (sounded good to me if not to my bandmates). And Harry's equipment list was taken right from the Permanent Waves tour book - Electric Mistress flanger, Morley wah/volume pedal, MXR Distortion Plus...

The personal influences may be less apparent but are there nonetheless. The intense music and intelligently crafted lyrics about the power of the individual, freewill (and the responsibility that comes with it), honor, fairness and an overall sense of creativity for its own sake (art as expression...) certainly resonated with us. I've always found their music to be empowering.

We became RUSH fans back in '78-'79 and saw them in concert for the first time in 1980 on their "Permanent Waves" tour. By that time they already had 6 albums out and seemed to be well established. Who would believe that more that 30 years later we would still be fans of the same band with the same three guys who continue writing and recording relevant music and put on one of the best live shows money can buy.

Being a long time RUSH fan is something I take great pride in, though I'm very selective about who I speak to about the depths of my devotion to the band; sort of like the topics of politics and religion.

I hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please take a moment to let the other guys know - they did all the hard work, I just showed up and plugged in.
