After receiving a formal invitation from the Los Angeles Zoo, Wushu Shaolin Entertainment along with prevalent Chinese cultural artisans, performed for all of the guests during the Chinese Lunar New Year. It was a mesmerizing demonstration of cultural diversity, Dance, Martial Arts, and an extraordinary Dragon Dance Costume.

For many of the guests, it was an unforgettable experience, sharing culture and insight and serving to educate Los Angelinos and inspire others along the way. The Los Angeles Zoo was first established in 1912, better known as the Griffith Park Zoo, and was relocated to the current location in November of 1966. Many years later, in the 1990’s, city officials passed a $300 million USD budget proposal drafted to deal with the infrastructure of the facility. Since then, in 1998, the zoo opened “Chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains”, followed by “Red Ape Rainforest” in 2000, and the “Komodo Dragon Exhibit” thereafter.
In 2002, the zoo became a certified botanical gardens and the official name of the institution was changed to the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Spread throughout the zoo grounds, there are 15 different collections, highlighting over 800 different plant species, with a total of over 7,400 individual plants. The Los Angeles Zoo has even been successful in its breeding program of the rare California condor, helping to grow the number of condors in the world from a low of 22 in the 1980s to over 430 today. It is one of the few zoos worldwide to have the mountain tapir.

In addition to conservation efforts, there is even an animal hospital, named after philanthropists Robert and Suzanne Gottlieb, the facility is situated in a restricted area of the zoo. Among other features, it includes a state-of-the-art intensive care unit, an on-site commissary, a surgical suite with observation area, and research facilities. The smallest patient treated was a spider tortoise (0.08 kg) and the largest was an Asian elephant (4,826 kg).
In order to better facilitate all of the various activities, The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, a nonprofit corporation, was created to support the Los Angeles Zoo in its mission to nurture wildlife and enrich the human experience. Also known as GLAZA, their primary responsibility is to seek and provide financial support for the zoo’s programs and capital projects.
