There’s been men with strange accents and headgear sniffing ‘round here for many’s the long year,
When they’re gone things’ll just slip back to the way they always turn out around here,
You may have the watches, but we have the time.

They say that they might have to stay here for ten years or more,
My grandfather’s grandfather’s buried up there on the hill, and I’ve no plans to move on,
There’s pressure from home to finish the job and get out before something goes wrong,
Which leave the uncomfortable question, “just what are they fighting for?”

You may have the night-vision goggles, but don’t think us blind,
I played in these hills as a boy and I don’t often lose my way,
I know how to hide, I know how to seek, just as night follows day,
Well you may have the weapons, but you can’t shoot what you can’t find.

And you say that you’re bringing us freedom, but don’t think us fools,
We can see you’ve other concerns than whether we send our girls to school,
Maybe look at your own before pointing the finger at somebody else,
You’re trying to bring us our freedom, well we might just take it ourselves,

For you may have the watches, but we have the time,
They’ve called this “the graveyard of empires” and I’ve no reason to disagree,
Over time the veil of vengeance may lift from your eyes and you might see,
You may have to watch us, for we have the time.
