Big System - live at Moonstomp, Tokyo 9/9/2011 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 21, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
BIG SYSTEM is the two-man band comprised of Winchester Nii Tete and Samm Bennett. They bring to the stage a shared love of propulsive rhythm and no-holds-barred, gut-level musical expression. Winchester's deep background in traditional Kpanlogo and other varieties of African drumming (from his native Ghana) mix with Samm's folk/blues stylings (informed by his deep-south upbringing in Alabama) and improvisational prowess (honed on the multifarious music scenes of his former New York City) to create a cross-cultural dialogue that is fresh and exciting. Boye's array of drums, played with joyful buoyancy and driving power, are the perfect foil for Bennett's neo-primitive instruments like the one-string diddley bow, jaw harps, mouthbows and all manner of interesting and unexpected percussion, toys and gadgets. And both members bring their voices to the mix, fusing traditional Ghanaian songs with southern American folkloric numbers and Samm's own original tunes and evocative tales.

Here they are joined by special guest, trumpeter Ryan Mizuno
