TAMMRA SIGLER monotypes to Philip Glass "In the Upper Room" - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 19, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
As soon as I saw the Miami City Ballet perform the ballet In the Upper Room, choreographed by Twayla Tharp, music by Philip Glass, and costumes by Norma Kamali, at the Naples Philharmanic Hall, I knew immediately that I needed to paint to that music. This suite of monotypes/drawings, which was created at the John Blair Mitchell Print Studio at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, during the summer of 2009, is the product of that moment! The suite consists of eleven pieces: each of the nine dances having a corresponding print, except dance number nine, for which I made three! This collection, like all of my paintings and prints, is first and foremost about line, color, form and relationships. But even more so, my work is always about the mark, and in this series that is most evident. It is as if each note and sound became a mark and a gesture. It is truly music on paper! Tammra Sigler
