Early Paris Sixties' Psychedelic revival Club dancing : "Pop 2000" at la Java (ex. Baldi) , 1989! - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 02, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Staged at the ex. "La Java"/ future "Nouvelle Java", "Baldi" Discothèque & Dancing (... that's right, THEE authentic Java nightclub in Paris where legendary French Music Hall artists Mistinguette, Josephine Baker and Maurice Chevalier once performed in the roaring twenties and 1930s! ), this is one of my earliest CLUB co-organisations, at the tail end of the 1980's Sixties Garage/Psych Revival in Spring 1989, while I was still a fresh faced student. It includes in the crowd members of my then Garage-Punk band : The Tribe (see "Ain't No Friend Of Mine" video elsewhere on the channel!), my brother Olivier the bass player, and drummer Ludovic Boulet, with their friends, followers and girlfriends dancing to the sound of Pebbles and Nuggets Garage comps, various Pop & Psych, 60's Punk and Beat music from the collector vinyls, I (DJ Astro) was mixing with future DJ of Paris Grunge nights and group gig organiser at Le Rex Club, Michel Musac... We patterned ourselves after the legendary Paris sixties and psych. club of the mid-1980's : "L'Acid Rendez-Vous", from a few years previous... only we were even more hip and Underground! Our Club was called : "Pop 2000", borrowing our name from a famous French Pop Music record series of the late 60s/ early 70s (and also from a cult French Library sound series called : "Montparnasse 2000"... whatever, it all sounded Cool!), and we featured self made film projections and Vintage light shows with our own fluids. It was filmed by Romain Hannebert (now an Audiovisual professional working on films, archives and French Cable TV) who also added the "Dream Machine" special effects on video : ... So, does the Week-end start here?
Anyway, this was well before any New Untouchables' "Moustrap" or "Beat Bespoké" in London, before any "Men from U.N.K.E.L." in Köln (Germany), "Purple Weekend" in Léon or "Euro Yéyé" in GijÒn (both in Spain) or... you get the idea! ;-)

Later on I would do the more popular "Root '66" weekly Sunday niter at la Discothèque "Le Saint" in the world famous Paris St. Michel student quarter on the left banke... but, this here was the blue print!

(Thanks to Dominique Barthès for digitalising the video from VHS to MPEG format, and passing on the clip!)
