PUBLISHED:  Apr 01, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
Here is one of the most sought after UK Vertigo `Swirls` by the Prog Jazz Rockers `Affinity` called `Affinity` (6360 004) released in 1970 featuring Linda Hoyle on vocals, it comes in a distinctive matt finish `(Marcus) Keef` designed gatefold sleeve (he also did Black Sabbaths first 3 albums, Zior, Cressida`s Asylum and many more), the original first pressing has the large Swirl above the spindle hole (side B) with Vertigo logo beneath the hole, not the rarest of the `Swirls` but it still seems to hold its value very well with Mint copies going for 1000 British Pounds as recently as 2014, condition is obviously relative but even a VG+ copy will cost around £300 these days, looks like a good investment this one, why not subscribe as I add new rarities regularly

Affinity was formed by former students from the science department at Sussex University, including Grant Serpell (drums) and Lynton Naiff (piano). Naiff and Serpell, along with members of other bands gathered from other university bands, formed the pop group Ice. Although Ice was moderately successful commercially it only lasted for about a year before it disbanded.
In 1968, Brighton, East Sussex Affinity was born, signed by Vertigo in 1970 on the crest of the jazz-rock wave, the short-lived Affinity released only one single and album before splitting. Comprised of young singer Linda Hoyle, bassist Mo Foster, guitarist Mike Jupp, keyboardist Lynton Naiff, and drummer Grant Serpell, a musical maturity was displayed, blending folk, jazz, soul, blues, and elements of contemporary psychedelia and progressive rock. Highly regarded by critics, who praised the young Hoyle's powerful vocals and Naiff's inherent organ skills, it looked as if the band were to have a healthy career. But although the seven-track album was well received, the band split soon after. To label their work under any one genre is a hard task, and the jazz-rock/blues-rock classification they are usually squeezed into is far from fitting. As with many other late-'60s progressive acts, Affinity was just getting their footing when they split.
Affinity played their first London show at the Revolution Club in Bruton Place in London on 5 October 1968. One of the gigs they were playing at the time was broadcast on BBC Radio Jazz Club. Ronnie Scott, heard a recording of the show and subsequently agreed to manage them. He also agreed to give them regular bookings at his world-famous jazz club.
From this point on they were getting lots of live work in London's discotheque and club scene and on the college circuit. They also toured in Europe and Scandinavia and some festivals. They appeared on TV spots, including Disco 2 which was the forerunner to The Old Grey Whistle Test. They recorded the theme for a Shredded Wheat commercial series ("There are 2 men in my life..."). They released this eponymously titled album on the Vertigo label in 1970.
