Gabriel Grovlez: La Sarabande; Berceuse de la Poupée - Video
PUBLISHED:  Nov 03, 2008
DESCRIPTION:
Grovlez (1879-1944) was a French pianist and conductor, who premiered Ravel's Sonatine in 1906. These two pieces are the third and second of 'L'Almanach aux Images', a set of eight short piano pieces, which is perhaps Grovlez' best-known work. Each piece is prefaced by a poem by the French 'fantaisiste' poet Tristan Klingsor (1874-1966). He is still in EU copyright for a long time to come, so I will not reproduce the poems. In presenting these videos, I should say that the pieces really demand a piano of the very highest quality to achieve the extreme dynamics specified. This cannot always be done on a domestic piano like mine, but I hope I have given an idea of what the pieces could sound like! Incidentally, a viewer has provided a link to their imaginative electronic reworking of the Sarabande melody here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGsVKAiAnME&t=88s . My thumbnail features a baby doll bedtime playset from Toys 'N' Tuck ( https://tinyurl.com/talrz5g ).
