Soft Cell es un dúo británico, máximos exponentes de la música tecno-pop de principios de los ochenta, también denominados Nuevos Románticos. El dúo se formó en la ciudad de Leeds, Inglaterra, en octubre de 1979 por Marc Almond y Dave Ball, estudiantes de arte, produciendo música para representaciones teatrales.
En 1981 lanzan el single "Tainted Love" que los llevó a la fama. Ese mismo año lanzaron su primer álbum Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret que también fue un éxito de ventas. En 1982 lanzaron sus álbumes de remixes Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing. En 1983 editaron The Art of Falling Apart y en diciembre y ese mismo año por problemas internos el grupo se disuelven. En 1984 se lanzó This Last Night in Sodom sin que existiese ya Soft Cell. Después de la desaparición de Soft Cell, Marc Almond inició su carrera solista y Dave Ball participó en algunos proyectos musicales, pero sin la fama de su ex compañero de grupo.

En el año 2001 sus integrantes reformaron el grupo, recomezaron con sus conciertos y en 2002 fue lanzado su primer álbum en 18 años titulado Cruelty Without Beauty. En el 2003 fue lanzado el álbum Live de lo que fueron sus conciertos para promocionar Cruelty Without Beauty.
Tainted Love es una canción originalmente escrita por Ed Cobb, del grupo The Four Preps, grabada en 1964 para Gloria Jones y que obtiene popularidad mundial cuando en 1981 Soft Cell la lanzara como cover. Marilyn Manson lanza su propia versión en el 2002 como el primer single de la banda sonora de la película Not Another Teen Movie. La canción luego se incluiría como bonus track en su siguiente disco, The Golden Age Of Grotesque. Su video, dirigido por Philip G. Atwell, obtuvo fuerte rotación en MTV Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica.

En 2010, el cantante argentino Emmanuel Horvilleur realizó una versión para el disco de covers La 100 Vivo!

En 2011, la banda de heavy metal Scorpions versiona la canción para su disco de versiones y regrabaciones llamado Comeblack.

Soft Cell, formed in Leeds in 1980, are a synth-pop duo
comprising of art students Marc Almond and Dave Ball. Originally, vocalist Almond and synth player Ball teamed to compose music for theatrical productions, and as Soft Cell, their live performances continued to draw heavily on the pair's background in drama and the visual arts. A self-financed EP, 'Mutant Moments' brought the duo to the attention of Some Bizzare label head Stevo, who enlisted Daniel Miller to produce their underground hit single 'Memorabilia' the following year.
It was the next Soft Cell effort, 1981's "Tainted Love," that brought the duo to international notoriety, the duo reinventing the already well-known track as a hypnotic electronic dirge which became the year's best-selling British single, as well as a major hit abroad. The group's debut LP, 'Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret', was also enormously successful, and was followed by the 1982 remix collection, 'Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing'.
While 1983's 'The Art of Falling Apart' proved as popular as its predecessors, the LP's title hinted at the internal problems between the duo. Prior to the release of 1984's 'This Last Night in Sodom, Soft Cell', they had already broken up.
Almond immediately formed the electro-soul unit Marc and the Mambas; another group, Marc Almond and the Willing Sinners, followed before the singer finally embarked on a solo career in the late '80s. After a number of years of relative inactivity, Ball later resurfaced in the techno outfit the Grid.
