Chia-Ying Lin - Shan Shui for Flute, 2 Percussion and Piano (world première) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 18, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
Shan Shui, literally meaning ‘mountain-water’ in Chinese, takes inspiration from Chinese landscape paintings in which the main subject is mountains. The art of Shan Shui paintings makes philosophical reference to Taoism (Daoism), and its idea of how minor human presence is in the vastness of the cosmos. In my piece, I attempt to depict the vastness of such landscapes and the human figures within. This is achieved by use of the vibraphone's arco notes to symbolise the human figures often depicted fleetingly in these paintings.
