Un retour tout en nouveauté, quatre ans après le précédent opus Continental, puisque Orwell montrera un nouveau visage sur scène. Cinq musiciens rendront justice aux pièces richement orchestrées qui composent ce nouvel album. Les habitués Jacques Tellitocci (vibraphone, choeurs), Régis Nesti (batterie), Emmanuel Harang (basse) et le fondateur Jérôme Didelot (chant, guitare) ont été rejoints par le flûtiste et pianiste Renaldo Greco pour préparer ces futurs concerts.

Mais Exposition Universelle est aussi une manière de revisiter le premier véritable album du groupe, Des lendemains, qui avait posé les bases d’une écriture empreinte d’un certain classicisme habillée d’arrangements luxuriants, un cocktail assez inhabituel en langue française.

Les quatre ans de silence discographique écoulés depuis la sortie du dernier album n’ont pas été une période d’inactivité. Outre des concerts d’Orwell en France, Allemagne, Grande-Bretagne ou en Espagne, Jérôme Didelot a contribué à l’enregistrement du deuxième album de son ami et compère Alexandre Longo aka Cascadeur, Ghost Surfer. Alexandre est d’ailleurs présent sur le titre Rengaine européenne.

Orwell vient de rejoindre l’écurie japonaise Rallye Label qui aura la primeur de la sortie du nouvel album Exposition Universelle, le 12 août prochain.

L’album sortira en automne en France (distribution Rue Stendhal), en Belgique (Hot Puma), en Grande-Bretagne (Folkwit) et aux Etats-Unis (Radio Khartoum).

Airy, orchestral-pop brilliance from Jérôme Didelot and friends, propelled by guitars, piano, strings, brass, vocal harmonies, vibraphone and vintage electronics (Optigan, Mellotron, etc.). Richly arranged, but ever ready with the odd synth, tuba, backmasking or unexpected chord to pierce the mix, Orwell’s fifth album is a return to French after the English experience of 2011’s “Continental.” Vous ne parlez pas français? No worries! Sunshine pop and baroque rock are the lingua franca here.

Exposition Universelle was conceived on the tenth anniversary of Orwell’s debut album “Des lendemains” (released as “Following Days” in the US). Listening back to the old material, Didelot felt many leads had been left unexplored: “So I wrote ‘Exposition universelle’ as if it was a kind of follow-up. The themes—the light and dark sides of mankind, the way the future is linked to progress, the gap between collective and intimate issues—are rather similar, as well as the instrumentation (quite orchestral) but the writing is more mature, I guess.”

Didelot’s collaborators this time around include Thierry Bellia (Variety Lab), Alexandre Longo (Cascadeur), Vincent Mougel (Kidsaredead), Julien Lonchamp (Jack and The’).
