FROM THE KAREL MUSIC EXPO IN CAGLIARI, ITALIA
PRESENTED BY TOM MILLETT
Hugo Race is a prolific performer, musician, writer and producer. Hugo founded the seminal Australian cult band The Wreckery in 1985, which recently reunited (2009) for the release of the retrospective 'Past Imperfect'. A key element in Melbourne's early 80s post-punk scene, Hugo was first introduced to the international stage as a founding member of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds.

Over the last 25 years Hugo has lived in Italy, France, Germany, UK and the USA. With his international True Spirit collective he has produced 14 Hugo Race & True Spirit albums, the latest, '53rd State' released in Australia and Europe in 2008 to rave reviews, followed in 2009 by the 'bootleg' CD 'Live in Wolow Jail', recorded in a maximum security penitentiary in Poland.

Hugo's various collaborations number another ten or more albums spread over several continents including his USA project Dirtmusic (their BKO album, recorded in Bamako, Africa, a cross-cultural collaboration with the Malian Tuareg group Tamikrest, cited as one of the best albums of 2010), the French-American band Lilium, the Brazilian project Moses Complex, the Berlin-based Rogall's Electric Circus Sideshow, and the Sicilian band Sepiatone with whom Hugo has released two albums with a third in the pipeline.

In 2010, Hugo's album 'Between Hemispheres', a mix of African instruments and edgy electronica, received rave reviews globally; Hugo's new solo album 'Fatalists', his first record as a solo singer/songwriter, was released in Europe through WSS/Gusstaff Records and hailed in the Italian music press as a 'masterpiece'.

Besides acting in and composing for feature film, television and theatre, Hugo has presented his 'The Merola Matrix' multimedia installations throughout Italy, performed in contemporary opera (David Chesworth's 'Richter-Meinhof Opera' at the ACCA, and Andrée Greenwell's 'The Hanging of Jean Lee' at the Sydney Opera House), written screenplays ('Ghosts of the Civil Dead'), and written and published non-fiction.
