1
The problem with you suburb curtains, they never let the Sun in. Gotta husband and a pre-teen daughter, but living still seems thin. Nothing last forever... Resignation grows. Into your memories, should have stared inside his big brown eyes forever.

Hello, how are you... And all those plans we thought we'd do?... Me & you. Hello, things have changed... the more they do they stay the same. Things have changed.

2
Reunion and you hope he's coming, classmates having fun. What you would give to make up for all the things you missed when we were young. But nothing last forever, everybody knows... except the moment when you'll stand inside his slim brown arms all over.

Hello, how are you... And all those plans we thought we'd do... Me & you. Hello, things have changed... the more they do they stay the same. Things have changed

Nothing last forever... Anyone could see. His back seat's like a spider web, his thick brown arms all over...

Hello, how are you... And all those plans we thought we'd do... Me & you. Hello, things have changed... the more they do they stay the same
Things have changed... Hello, how are you? Our young selves are the only ones we fooled.

THE BACKSTORY: Back in college, I was in my dorm laundry room with my guitar, waiting on my clothes to dry. I had just learned to make bar chords on the guitar and was proudly playing a rough version of "Hotel California." If you listen to the chorus of "Our Young Selves," it's just the first two chords of "Hotel California, plus the 5th and 6th chords. So if you connect the "On a dark dessert highway, cool wind in my hair" with "Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light," you got the first 4 chords of my chorus. I didn't know what the song was gonna be about @ the time, but the words that I sing in the chorus now are exactly the same words that I sang @ conception - Which further proves my theory that these songs are already pre-written, independent of me and they're @ their best when I'm in it as little as possible.

5 years later I was playing "The Year of the Cat" on my roommate's piano, when I heard the verse and bridge to the song. He was a big Billy Joel fan and I had the words to "Only the Good Die Young" in my head @ the time... specifically the line "The stain glass curtain you're hidding behind never lets in the sun." That's how I got my first line to the song.
