THE BACKSTORY: Back in college, I was in my dorm laundry room with my guitar, waiting on my clothes to dry. I had just learned to make bar chords on the guitar and was proudly playing a rough version of "Hotel California." If you listen to the chorus of "Our Young Selves," it's just the first two chords of "Hotel California, plus the 5th and 6th chords. So if you connect the "On a dark dessert highway, cool wind in my hair" with "Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light," you got the first 4 chords of my chorus. I didn't know what the song was gonna be about @ the time, but the words that I sing in the chorus now are exactly the same words that I sang @ conception - Which further proves my theory that these songs are already pre-written, independent of me and they're @ their best when I'm in it as little as possible.

5 years later I was playing "The Year of the Cat" on my roommate's piano, when I heard the verse and bridge to the song. He was a big Billy Joel fan and I had the words to "Only the Good Die Young" in my head @ the time... specifically the line "The stain glass curtain you're hidding behind never lets in the sun." That's how I got my first line to the song.
