For one of them it started in a mouldy basement club in Berlin. Another caught the bug in a used record store in Lapland. Rovaniemi to be precise. The third piece of the puzzle heard Boban Markovic at some interminable parking lot drinking session at a Nordic folk music festival that shall remain nameless. The seeds were planted.

Of the three core members of Serefe Sound System only Jaakko Laitinen's seed grew into full bloom more or less immediately. He started the short-lived Orkestar Business Class and then moved on to Jaakko Laitinen & Väärä Raha. The band has two albums out and plays a music it calls "Lapland Balkan".

Arttu Tolonen and Teemu Korpipää were passionate fans and didn't put their love of horny grooves into effect for many, many years. Serefe Sound System got its start when Arttu interviewed Jaakko for a magazine. The band brings together Arttu's samples and string instruments, Teemu's machines and Jaakko's exaggeratedly sentimental and melodramatic vocalizations. Decades rush by, from 1950s to 2010s, as schalger melodies collide with philosophical ruminations and acid house riffs and the bouzouki cries the white man's blues. The line between concert and dj show, live music and pantomime is annoyingly obscured.

It's sweaty, but you can always wipe your face on your tie.

Serefe Sound System also makes remixes, which may or may not contain Balkan ingredients.
