MOSQUITO - Demo - Video
PUBLISHED:  Nov 09, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Did you know that there’s more than 3,500 species of mosquitos?

Bet you didn’t. Bet you don’t even know that mosquitos don’t even have teeth, or that the average mosquito only weighs approximately 2.5 grams, or that a mosquito can drink three times its weight in blood, or – alright, alright, that’s enough of that. Sorry, but I feel like it’s somewhat necessary for me to occupy this write-up with stupid mosquito fun-facts, because frankly, there aren’t very many things I can say about the Mosquito BAND that isn’t simply in the vein of “this band is really fucking good”. I originally featured a track from this Chicagoan punk group’s demo, “Vomit”, back in my September mix (https://youtu.be/YCDNAkpQLuE?t=391), but their inclusion was more of a personal compromise than anything. As I briefly expressed in the video’s respective write-up, I absolutely fucking love-love-love every single song in this six-track demo, to the extent where I was legitimately troubled by the idea of picking just ONE song to feature on my channel. Had I not been so bogged down by requests at the time, I surely would’ve made room in my posting schedule to share the tape in its entirety; I instead settled on sharing “Vomit”, a song that still stands to be my personal favorite slice of this EP, with the other five songs coming in a close second. At once. In a tie. Because they’re all so fuckin’ good. Seriously, this tape is killer.

As my bountiful amounts of luck would have it, a member of Mosquito actually took notice of me gushing over their material, and consequently contacted me a two weeks or so after the video went live. Lookin’ for some all-expenses-paid Jimmy prime-time, Kyle – who plays whatever-the-fuck in Mosquito – asked if I’d still be up to upload their demo onto my channel. I, of course, happily agreed to share their material, but made sure to ask if there was any information about the band that he’d be willing to share. Kyle provided this:

“Let's see, we started playing in July. There's 4 of us, past members of Safety Word, Kuffs, Muscles Plant and Nubiles. We played 5 or 6 shows around Chicago and Indiana. Also we need a van. That's all I got.”

Clearly, Mosquito’s pandering to the punks-who’ve-got-a-spare-van-for-sale demographic with this demo tape. I’ve got no clue if they’ve gotten themselves a van yet, but, uh, I guess you can reach out to these guys if you can help out on that van-front. As for the rest of us drooling, vanless turds, I suppose we oughta just jam these mean puppers and hope that we can eventually get our hands on the physical copies of the EP, which either DO exist, or will soon. In fact, the version of the EP featured in this video is an updated mixing that the group produced for the physical tape, which as Kyle described it, was intended to make the songs “LOUD AS FUCC”. Kyle said he’d send a tape over to me “shortly”, but I’ll believe it once I’ve got that sucker in my proverbial mailbox. Y’all are a buncha teases when it comes to your tapes, believe me. If I had a nickel for every time that someone told me they’d send me a tape but never did, I’d have enough nickels to, like, bring in to one of those coins-for-cash machines in return for a whole dollar bill. But whatever, the current state of the EP’s physical tapes doesn’t change its ridiculous potency and memorability. Phlegm-laced vocals, bouncy, yet equally-trudging rhythms, loose instrumentation that sound appropriately reminiscent of a buzzing mosquito, every facet of this release is 100% on the ball. I don’t know what Mosquito has in store for us further down the line, but I can only hope that this band has a bright and prosperous future amidst whatever Chicagoan basements they choose to tear up. They’re sick as shit, and certainly sound like it.
