Massivan - Slowoscope:
Funny how time flies. It's been a while since the last full blown Massivan album… and all of a sudden, seemingly out of nowhere (aka the mediterranean island of Formentera), now this. 13 amazingly daring, genre bending & at times either jazzy or rather dark shimmering electronica infused pieces, all radiating a "new" sound, telling the story of a different approach and another journey. What happened?

"I wanted to make an electronic downtempo album with a new signature in the first place, under a different moniker. Fact is, in the end it somehow became another Massivan album. It may be a little different soundwise, but I think in the end one can recognize my signature", Ivan says, kicking back & giving way to a bit of an ironic smile on his face.

A signature that has definitely matured over the last few years. After some major life changes, Swiss born/Balearic based Ivan Pezzini aka Massivan comes correct, cool, calm & more collected than ever. "I had to rearrange my life, remix it so to say. With my son growing up, we had to change our family habits, started hopping between islands for his education, which automatically put an end to coming home at 5 in the morning. Therefor, I also stopped djing."

But music was and is always there on both the in- and outside, once you went in as deep as Massivan did, of course. This time, it was just about finding the right moments - somewhere between family life and managing two high end concept stores on Formentera together with his wife.

"With our businesses growing on Formentera, I also had to put more time into being present at the shops, let alone selling, buying, producing fashion and so on. Hence there was much less time to produce music. I also decided to make quite a drastic change in my life, healthwise, which took a lot of time and energy."

All that definitely helped to free the mind before walking out fearlessly and curiously onto previously uncharted musical territory, combining the results of what was found with the essence of what was before. "La Vie" may well be the closest outcome to the overall vibe people know & appreciate from previous Massivan releases… with his long term collaborator, vocalist Bea Luna, gracing a decently slow deephouse mover the way only she can.

While "L'eau lente de Quim" and the closing track "Darchristmas" feature the melancholic violin blessings of Massivan's father, a classically trained pro instrumentalist by the way, all other instruments and vocals on all other tracks come courtesy of Massivan himself.

Effortlessly easy instrumental groovers like "Fer" and "Pschent" contrast those tunes with a darker undertone ("Full moon", "11", "Mother") nicely - while "Orfa" offers quite futuristic perspectives into a way more percussive, almost tribal territory.

"Slowoscope" definitely marks a turning point for the sound and life of a true 21st century island man they call Massivan. And it's quite obvious to hear that this journey leads in the right direction, first and foremost following an instinct to simply keep on moving. Maybe just a tiny bit slower than before… then again that probably comes with island life automatically at some point :)
