REDWOOD – OF BUTTERFLIES AND HURRICANES
Butterflies.Such small creatures, which dance through the air with so much elegance and grace. And hurricanes. Such destructive winds, which blow away everything in their path. "Of Butterflies And Hurricanes", the fourth album by Redwood, combines both: lightness and strength, tenderness and hardness, the gentle breeze of a wing beat and the raging of a whirlwind. Their record released about two and half years ago "We're All Gonna Die" reached the top 20 of the charts, received in 2008 the Swiss Music Awards as "Best Newcomer National" and finally rooted the band in the Swiss musical landscape, when a small earthquake suddenly rocked the group. Lesley Meguid, the lead singer at that time, had decided to pursue her own career as a solo artist. However, it quickly became apparent to the rest of the group, that they had to carry on. With the confidence of the record company and backed by their management, Redwood began the search for a new female vocalist. And they found Nicole Kammermann (ex--‐ Eyelash and Of Queens And Rats), who had already appeared as a guest singer with Redwood just before the last concert with the old team during an unplugged show. Her versatile voice gives the sound of the band a new aesthetic. She is not only a new piece of the jigsaw, but also creates a new image, in which the divisions disappear. "Nicole brought everything with her which we were looking for", is the unanimous opinion of the band. How smoothly she had integrated into the group, was demonstrated by the new front woman at her baptism of fire in April of last year, when Redwood played as support of AC/DC in front of more than 13,000 visitors at the Hallenstadion in Zurich. "Of Butterflies And Hurricanes" is however much more than just a new Redwood album. It is the most rounded, compelling, high--‐contrast and without a doubt the most honest recording, which the band from Zurich has made to date. It is also a clear response to those who had called into question both the band and its future. Redwood combine ultry rock numbers, catchy pop songs and sentimental ballads. They show a side which is sometimes broad--‐based and sometimes fleet--‐footed. It is wide--‐ranging withoutbeing arbitrary and at the same time, simple without being trivial. Regardless of whether it is irresistible like the first single "Who We Are", uncompromising such as in "The Only Girl Who's Not Dancing" or soulful as in "The Origin Of The Species", "Of Butterflies And Hurricanes" thrives on the many beguiling moments that are lurking in every song. There is no alternative but to fall for it. Butterflies and hurricanes – there you are. They both have one thing in common: they are associated with the earth as well as the sky. For Redwood this can mean only one thing – onwards and upwards. And even at these heights the air will not become too thin for a long time.
