DESCRIPTION:
Mana Maoli Collective artist and long-time Mana Maoli supporter Kapali Keahi was the first of our MMC artists to test out the newly built recording booth in the Mana Mele Mobile Studio. Kapali recorded a series of Hawaiian classics which included "Green Rose Hula", "Pua Hone", "Ka `ōpae", and "Kaulana Nā Pua" in his relaxed yet uplifting style. He also tracked an original song, "When I Look", which speaks of the over-development happening within the Hawaiian Islands.
This recording took place in Kāne'ohe, O`ahu, with a beautiful view of the Ko'olau mountains. Rather than overdubbing his vocals on his guitar, Kapali opted to sing and play guitar at the same time, giving us a chance to capture the subtleties of an authentic performance which undoubtedly fit the studio's environment that day. Mahalo nui to Kapali for sharing his mana`o and Mana Maoli, as well as Kelli for running the recording session and to fellow MMC artist Maria "Songbird" Remos for her kōkua with filming.
