Legs & Co - Ma Baker - TOTP TX: 07/07/1977 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Nov 24, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Tony Blackburn looks at the weekly pop chart from 7th July 1977 and introduces The Rah Band, Olivia Newton-John, Smokie, Brotherhood of Man, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Alessi, Barry Biggs, Andy Gibb, Hot Chocolate, Donna Summer and a Legs & Co dance sequence.

After teasing the record buying punters on the end credits, we finally get to see this classic slice of Frank Farian's Germanic disco pseudonym that is Boney M. (named after an Australian TV show) singing a song about outlaw Ma Barker.(why they changed it to Baker, I have no idea)

The melody is based on a Tunisian folk song "Sidi Mansour", with lyrics and a disco beat added, and sung by deep voiced Farian and husband & wife team Bill Swisher (FBI voice over) & Linda Blake.

So the Legs routine in question, well Sue gets to dress up again (previously in Hotel California and the classic bee outfit of the Mahna Mahna routine from earlier in the year) as Ma Baker, looking like a rather worryingly erotic looking granny (don't ask, I can't answer that - except it's Sue) high kicking and hand bag swinging inside some disco lit triangle

The rest of the girls pay homage to the film 'Cabaret' (another German link there) sat astride chairs in bright coloured jackets and flowing skirts, it involves not alot of dancing but hair swishing and leg kicking (maybe they were tired that week and needed a sit down), but putting that aside they do look lovely thou (always do thou) don't you agree?

Sadly not a great routine, rather rushed and not really thought out in the long run, but still Sue is having fun and hammy it up for the camera, the saving grace in a rather plain routine, and not really one of my favs at all (shame really)

BBC4 showing in High Quality MPEG2
