Come Back As A Flower - Bass cover by Maarten Bakker - Video

DESCRIPTION:
I think "Come Back As A Flower" from the 1979 record "Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants" is one of Stevie's best and most moving compositions. Also: It doesn't get played as much as it deserves in my experience. Maybe it's because the tune is sung by Syreeta Wright on the album, and people don't associate it with the 'standard material'.

This morning (while trying to remember all the twists and turns the chords take) I came up with this short arrangement, and I decided to record it right away. The melody and harmony are just so beautiful on this one, and even with all the surprising modulations it lends itself well for a distilled version on bass. I did change the key to be able to use some open strings and make it fit in a four-string register. And I added my own intro and outro just to add a bit of myself.

You can also hear how great my De Gier Bebop bass sounds solo. I found great use for the option to switch it's tone-control to a vintage capacitor for that sweet midrangy sound that works well for playing chords and melody.
