Violins - Rebecca Zapen

_____________
She said, "Your poetry lends itself to 3/4 time."
I said, "Good poetry should always be timeless."
A maraschino cherry in an Amaretto sour
She said, "Also, it should remain rhyme-less."
The windows can't hold back the cold infiltration
Or the night just outside that's falling
She said, "You can't light a fire with a book of wet matches."
Two of a kind, suited, shuffled and stalling
And the voices of all the others
Melted to a background drone
Though the light played on many faces
We were together, alone
"I took to this world like a bat takes to daylight,
Or a firefly takes to the raging sea.
But I've heard the music and distant silver singing
And, I've been clinging to it desperately."
Her sarcastic smile took a while to change
Less guarded and cautious, at ease
She said, "I've loved before but it hurt me more
To stay with you, so I had to leave'
And the voices of all the others
Melted to a background drone
Though the light played on many faces
We were together, alone
