Unlike many of Haydn's piano sonatas, which were, in the main, written for his students (accounting for the great range in their difficulty), this sonata in C major, Hoboken XVI: 50, was written in 1794 for and dedicated to Theresa Jansen (later Bartolozzi), one of the leading pianists in London. Jansen, who is thought to have been born in Germany around 1770, was, along with her brother Louis, a pupil of Clementi, and the dedicatee of several works by Clementi and three piano trios by Haydn, as well as his E-flat sonata, Hob. 16/52.
