DESCRIPTION:
Jean Eichelberger Ivey - Skaniadaryo
Piano - David Wimer
Skaniadaryo was a Seneca Indian who lived in Western New York from about 1749 to 1815. Inspired by visions, and mingling old and new elements, he founded a reformed version of the traditional Iroquois religion, which became widespread among his people, and persists today among the Iroquois. To the composer, Skaniadaryo symbolizes New York's heroic past - the times celebrated for instance in the novels of James Fenimore Cooper- as well as mingling of two heritages, and a way of life more intimate with nature. In this composition, which in its way also blends new and traditional elements, and suggests sounds of nature with pure electronics, Ivey tried to convey some of this complex of feelings.
