Jade Elektra & Midnight Society "How Do I Look?" (Documentary Clip Video) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 09, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Back in 2006, Wolfgang Busch (who also directed and filmed my drag competition reality TV pilot "SHOWGIRL 101") released a documentary called "HOW DO I LOOK". During the final editing process, I was asked about doing a song for the soundtrack. At the time I was working with Eric Reyes (who was member of Midnight Society back then) and I told him of my idea. After seeing some footage and realizing that this documentary would be considered a sequel to "Paris Is Burning", Eric and I began working on the track. I wrote lyrics that pulled from my years of being in Black Gay Culture in New York City and Tampa, Florida. Eric did this amazing production that sampled and updated a couple of classics.

One of the reasons I am very proud to be a part of this documentary is that it sheds some light on how the AIDS crisis effected the Ballroom scene. And you know that anything that raises HIV/AIDS awareness is always important in my book.

Unfortunately, we were not able to come to an agreement with Wolfgang on the contract for the use of the song. So, it was not licensed for the film. In fact....I never signed anything for the couple of songs of mine that were used in the documentary. I am not mentioned in the credits (neither are my songs), but I guess I can say that I am unofficially part of this Ballroom History. The great thing about this video are all the cameos by all the Ballroom Legends.

This version of "How Do I Look" is called the "Eric Reyes Tribute Mix". DJ Relentless would later edit this version to make a single mix.

There was a little controversy about the track and RuPaul's "Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous". If you listen carefully there are some of the same lyrics. I was told that Ru was approached to do a track for the documentary as well, but ran into the same problem with the contract. And like the controversy with Paris Dupree and Jenny Livingston when it came time to finalize the footage for "Paris Is Burning"......"Paris Is Still Burning!"
