DESCRIPTION:
Joe Rosenthal's photograph of the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi provided the Marine Corps with an unforgettable brand icon, but Iwo Jima was also a place where 5,931 individual Marines were lost (killed, missing, or died of wounds). An additional 17,272 were wounded.
That's a lot of blood, muscle and bone in a battle that took place between February 19 and March 26, 1945.
