Finnish Folk Music - Pekka Kuusisto Home Video - July 2017 (Philharmonia Orchestra) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 25, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
From July to December 2017, we will be sharing special videos sent to us by the Finnish violinist, Pekka Kuusisto. In each film he will be sharing a folk song, filmed with natural light to show the passing of the seasons and the descent into the darkness of the Nordic winter. He will film these himself, in his home in rural Finland. This tune is called “Kopsin Jonas” and comes from Samuel Rinda-Nickola’s (1763-1818) Music Book, one of the main treasures of Finnish folk music. A pretty version of this polska can be heard at the second movement of the Rautavaara work for strings called “The Fiddlers.”

This video offering celebrates 100 years of Finnish independence and Pekka Kuusisto’s role in the opening of our London concert season at Southbank Centre, part of Southbank Centre’s year-long celebration of all things Nordic, Nordic Matters, and part of the festival, Nordic Music Days.
