I AM ERROR. / "The misunderstood Error"

"Zelda II: The Adventure of Link" is undoubted one of the best games for the NES and most likely one of the best games ever made. A title that went down in video gaming history, together with three famous words: "I AM ERROR." There are many opinions on the origins of this dialogue that reach from translation mistakes to a game-intern bug or the programmers subtle intention to refer to any software problems. And indeed there are clues that point in that direction, like the appearance of another character, very similar to Error: his friend Bagu. (Software errors and bugs!) But no matter how this famous line came up, we all know that Errors introduction to Link is more than just a sentence. It is one soul image captured inside a game cartridge of the ending 1980s ...

Of course the conversation with Error is also important for the progress of the game. (And yeah, we're talking about times without online walkthroughs, play-alongs and faqs!) Error tells Link his unusual name in anticipation of meeting him again. Because Link has to come back to learn about his secret: Only Error knows that there's a hidden tunnel to the Island Palace ...

The pixelated drama "The misunderstood Error" is now a short psychoanalizing story about this man called Error. Living in the small town of Ruto he suffers from the compulsion of telling everyone who he is. It might come in handy someday!
